General terms and conditions: Flight awards

Unless specified otherwise, the following terms and conditions apply to the booking and use of Miles & More flight awards (hereinafter “flight awards”). In addition to the terms and conditions set out below, the Miles & More terms and conditions of participation (hereinafter “terms and conditions of participation”) and the conditions of carriage of the operating airline apply at all times. The conditions of carriage for flights with Lufthansa Group airlines (Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, SWISS) can be found here. Flights with airlines other than those stated are governed by the conditions of carriage of the respective airline.

1. Flight awards

You can book flight awards online at miles-and-more.com for flights with Aegean Airlines, Air Astana, Air Canada, Air China, Air Dolomiti, Air India, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Avianca (including Aerogal and Lacsa), Brussels Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Copa Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Discover Airlines, EgyptAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Eurowings, EVA Air, LATAM, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, Luxair, Olympic Air, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways (does not apply to flights operated by Airlink), SWISS, TAP Portugal, Thai Airways, Thai Smile, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines. Your Miles & More Service Team will be happy to assist you in redeeming flight awards with all other Miles & More airline partners.

Flight awards can only be booked if seats are available in the relevant booking class for flight awards on the desired route. The number of miles required is determined by the current Star Alliance flight award chart. In addition to the miles required to claim a flight award, you must also pay the taxes, fees and airline surcharges, plus any additional service charges you may incur.

The contracting party and/or carrier for flight services is the operating airline (corresponding to the airline code). Miles & More GmbH shall act solely as an agent in this respect.

A distinction is made between the following flight awards:

1.1 One-way flight awards

One-way flight awards allow you to redeem a flight award for a single leg for 50% of the miles required for a standard flight award (outbound and return flight). Further information can be obtained under Redeeming miles or from your Miles & More Service Team.

1.2 Children’s flight awards and terms and conditions for infants

Infants (up to the age of two years) travel for 10% of the miles required for a standard flight award for adults, providing they do not occupy their own seat. You must pay any taxes, fees and airline surcharges, plus any service charges you may incur.

Children between the ages of 2 and 11 years (i.e. up to their 12th birthday) get 25% off the mileage amount required for a standard flight award. Children’s flight awards are only offered on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, Luxair and SWISS.

Flight awards can only be redeemed for children and infants if the child or infant is accompanied by an adult throughout the flight.

1.3 Star Alliance flight awards

1.3.1 General terms and conditions

With Star Alliance flight awards, you can combine flights with Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners as well as other airline partners within one flight award. Excluded from this are the special terms and conditions and special flight awards (e.g. reduced flight awards) offered by selected Miles & More airline partners.

The destinations and travel classes available for the relevant regions are determined by the Lufthansa and Miles & More airline partner timetables applicable at the time of booking. The availability of flight awards may vary depending on the date, season and flight destination. Some awards may not be available at certain times.

Flight awards are always quoted exclusive of taxes, fees and airline surcharges as well as any applicable service charges. These are billed separately, where applicable.

Open-jaw flights (i.e. flights in which the destination of the outbound flight is different from the departure location for the return flight) are permissible. In this case, the mileage amount for an open-jaw flight is calculated as 50% of the mileage amount for an outbound and return flight from the starting point of the outbound flight to the destination of the outbound flight, plus 50% of the mileage amount for an outbound and return flight from the departure airport of the return flight to the destination of the return flight. Further information can be obtained from your Miles & More Service Team.

1.3.2 Stopovers and connecting flights

Please contact your Miles & More Service Team for information about the current terms and conditions for stopovers and connecting flights.

1.3.3 Round-the-world flight awards

A round-the-world flight award ticket includes one Atlantic and Pacific crossing. There must be at least ten days between the start of the first and the end of the last long-haul flight.

Round-the-world flight award tickets are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. You must commence the last flight segment no later than the last day of validity of the flight award.

Further information about the terms and conditions for this flight award, such as the maximum number of segments and stopovers, can be obtained from your Miles & More Service Team. You can only book a round-the-world flight award ticket via your Miles & More Service Team.

1.4 Reduced flight awards and upgrade awards

Information about reduced flight awards and upgrade awards can be found in sections 3 and 4 of these general terms and conditions.

2. Terms and conditions of booking

The following terms and conditions of booking apply to the booking of flight awards:

2.1 Redeeming miles

The number of miles required for your flight award is based on one outbound and return flight in the selected award zone or chosen routing, the travel class chosen (First, Business, Premium Economy or Economy) and the advance booking period. Half the miles required for an outbound and return flight are charged for one-way flight awards (cf. section 1.1 of these general terms and conditions).

The mileage amount for flight awards for children between the ages of 2 and 11 years (up to the age of 12 years, cf. section 1.2 of these general terms and conditions) is calculated as 75% of the miles required for a standard outbound and return flight. Flight awards for infants without their own seat are calculated as 10% of the miles required for a standard outbound and return flight (cf. section 1.2 of these general terms and conditions).

The miles required to book flight awards are deducted from your Miles & More account as soon as the booking is completed.

Any taxes, fees and airline surcharges incurred are billed separately.

You can also pay any taxes, fees and airline surcharges incurred by SEPA direct debit if you have a valid current account with a financial institution in a European Union country.

SEPA direct debit can be used to pay for telephone bookings, too. Please note that this payment method requires an advance booking period of at least eight working days.

There are also specific daily limits that vary depending on your Miles & More status.

2.2 Advance booking period and ticket validity

You can book your flight awards up to 361 days before your chosen departure date. Flight awards are valid for up to 12 months from the date of issue.

Your flight award ticket can be booked and issued up to two hours before departure.

2.3 Rebookings and cancellations

A fee of EUR 50 (or the foreign currency equivalent) is charged per person and per rebooking when you rebook an award flight.

You can only change the date and time of the flight when rebooking. You cannot change the route. The original departure and arrival location must remain the same. Please note that additional costs or partial refunds for taxes, fees and airline surcharges may apply to rebookings.

In the event of a cancellation, you can choose from the following three alternatives:

2.3.1 Alternative 1

In this case, only taxes and fees will be refunded. Miles and airline surcharges will not be refunded. No additional costs will be incurred on your part.

2.3.2 Alternative 2

In this case, miles and airline surcharges will be refunded in addition to taxes and fees. In return, you will be charged EUR 50 (or the foreign currency equivalent) per person and cancellation. This type of refund will only be made at your express request. You can currently only cancel or (where permissible) rebook flight awards booked online via your Miles & More Service Team.

2.3.3 Alternative 3 (partial use of a flight award)

Please note that only a proportion of the taxes, fees and airline surcharges will be refunded in the event of the partial use of a flight award. Miles will not be refunded.

2.4 Transferability and bookings for third parties

Flight awards are not transferable once issued. The sale, exchange or auction of award documents is prohibited in accordance with section 2.3.8 of the terms and conditions of participation. The same applies to miles; cf. also section 2.1.3 of the terms and conditions of participation.

You can book flight awards for friends and family members without having to fly with them yourself. Flight awards transferred to third parties must be booked by you personally. The equivalent mileage amount will be deducted from your Miles & More account; cf. section 2.4.8 of the terms and conditions of participation.

2.5 Special terms and conditions for status customers: Companion Awards

Senators and HON Circle Members have the option of booking a Companion Award. A Companion Award also entitles you to take a companion with you on the same trip for 50% less than a standard flight award. The companion must commence and complete the trip with the qualifying Miles & More member. Companion Awards cannot be used in combination with reduced flight awards (e.g. Fly Smart and mileage bargains, etc.), children’s flight awards or one-way flight awards.

Companion Awards are available on the following airlines: Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair and SWISS.

2.6 Tickets

Flight awards are issued as electronic tickets.

2.7 Billing

An invoice will not be issued.

3. Reduced flight awards

You have the option of booking reduced flight awards on selected airlines. These include Fly Smart awards and mileage bargains or other promotions that may be operated in connection with flight awards. “Such awards are governed by the following general terms and conditions. Unless specified otherwise below, the general terms and conditions of booking stated in section 2 of these general terms and conditions also apply.”

3.1 General terms and conditions of booking for reduced flight awards

Reduced flight awards can only be booked if seats are available on the chosen route in the relevant booking class for reduced Miles & More flight awards. Reduced flight awards are quoted exclusive of taxes, fees and airline surcharges, i.e. they are calculated separately and are charged to your credit card accordingly.

Companion Awards for Senators and HON Circle Members are not available in conjunction with reduced flight awards (see section 2.5 of these general terms and conditions). This also applies to children’s flight awards and one-way flight awards (cf. sections 1.1 and 1.2 of these general terms and conditions).

Reduced flight awards for connecting flights:
The next available flight is always selected automatically for connecting flights. You will not be given the option to choose a connecting flight, even via your Miles & More Service Team.

Rebookings and cancellations:
It is not possible to rebook reduced flight awards. In the event of a cancellation, all fees and taxes paid will be refunded. Miles and airline surcharges will not be refunded.

Ticket validity:
The maximum validity of the ticket depends on the award product concerned.

3.2 Fly Smart awards

Fly Smart awards can be obtained for fewer miles than standard flight awards and are therefore subject to special terms and conditions. Fly Smart awards can only be booked online and cannot be combined with other reductions.

3.2.1 Terms and conditions of booking

Fly Smart awards are subject to availability. On European routes, online bookings are available in Economy and Business Class. On intercontinental routes, online bookings are only available in Economy Class. This offer applies to selected airlines and their routes. You can find the airlines and terms and conditions here.

3.2.2 Advance booking period and ticket validity

Booking period:
Between two weeks and two working days before the chosen departure date.

Minimum stay:
For Fly Smart awards within the zones Germany and Europe, the earliest possible date for the return flight is the first Sunday after commencing your journey. The minimum stay for Fly Smart awards is seven days for flights to intercontinental destinations.

3.3 Mileage bargains

Mileage bargains are monthly offers with selected airlines. They can only be booked for routes or destinations advertised as mileage bargains in the relevant Miles & More communications media. Further information is available online at www.miles-and-more.com.
Please note that special terms and conditions of travel and booking periods apply to each mileage bargain.

3.4 Other reduced flight awards

Other reduced flight awards which may be offered on miles-and-more.com are governed by the terms and conditions stated.

3.4.1. Terms and conditions of booking

Early Bird flight awards are subject to availability and can only be booked in Economy Class on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as on all European routes and for selected intercontinental travel destinations.

3.4.2. Advance booking period and ticket validity

Booking period:

more than 30 days before departure.

Minimum stay:
4 days or earliest possible return flight on the first Sunday after commencement of travel.

3.4 Other reduced flight awards

Other promotional flight awards offered on miles-and-more.com are subject to the terms and conditions stated in the offer.

4. Upgrade awards

Upgrade awards allow you to fly in a higher travel class on journeys with a specific airline, booking class and flight number.

Here you will find the airlines, booking classes and flight numbers, together with further terms and conditions and information about booking online.

Upgrade awards cannot be redeemed for bookings containing code-share flights or flight awards. Your reservation must be made under the flight number of the airline operating the flight.

You can only book an upgrade with a child with certain airlines. When requesting an upgrade for a child booked under a separate booking, you must ensure that adult supervision is guaranteed at all times, i.e. the adult passenger must travel in the same service class on all flight segments, or you must use the unaccompanied minors (UM) service.

Please contact your Miles & More Service Team about this.

All terms and conditions for the ticket originally issued also apply when you book an upgrade award. An upgrade award can only be used on routes for which a flight coupon has been issued for the ticket. Upgrade certificates are valid for a period of 12 months.

4.1 Terms and conditions of booking

An upgrade can only be booked from the travel class of the ticket booked to the next-highest travel class. You can also book an upgrade directly from Economy Class to Business Class with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines and SWISS. The amount of the upgrade award depends on the booking class of the ticket. Please note that the mileage amounts quoted apply to one leg, i.e. one voucher. If more than one leg or voucher is required for the trip, the mileage amounts will be added together.

Exception:
Upgrades for domestic flights within a European country are only available in combination with upgrades on intercontinental flights and are already included in the upgrade award for the intercontinental flight.

The prerequisite for booking an upgrade award is a fully paid flight, for example via lufthansa.com, for which a ticket has already been issued. Award tickets are excluded. All flight segments for which you wish to book an upgrade must have been confirmed beforehand in the relevant lower travel class. Upgrades can only be booked in Premium Economy Class, Business Class or First Class subject to availability.

Upgrades to Premium Economy Class are generally only offered on intercontinental flights with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS.

You can also make a standby booking for upgrades with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines and SWISS (incl. flights operated by Edelweiss). Please be aware that it is not always possible to book upgrades online for group bookings. In this case, please contact your Miles & More Service Team.

4.2 Advance booking period and payment

You can book an upgrade up to three hours before departure for flights with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines and SWISS, providing you have not already checked in. Times may vary from place to place depending on various factors (e.g. waiting times).

5. Other conditions

Miles & More GmbH is not obliged to take part in arbitration proceedings and unfortunately cannot offer you the option of participating in such proceedings.
