This is how your miles for flights are calculated

Would you like to know how many miles you will get for your flight? You can find out in advance by using our Travel Calculator.

Depending on how you booked, there are two different calculation methods: based on the airfare, or the distance flown and the booking class. Use our interactive animation to find out which calculation method will be used for your booking. Using our Travel Calculator you can calculate the miles you can expect to receive quickly and easily, either before or after booking your flight.

Which calculation method applies to my flight?

Calculation method 1: based on the airfare

miles = airfare x factor

What should I note?

  • Applies to flight bookings made via a Lufthansa Group airline1 booking channel
  • For bookings made via a travel agency or online travel agent, the mileage calculation is determined by the ticket number2
  • The calculation is based on the airfare in euros (ticket price + supplements charged by the Miles & More airline partner)
  • The factor depends on the frequent flyer status and the operating airline3
  • Airfares in a foreign currency are converted at the precise time of booking (OANDA currency converter)
  • Does not apply to the calculation of Points, Qualifying Points or HON Circle Points

Calculation method 2: based on the flight distance and booking class

Miles on continental flights = flat rate according to booking class

Miles on intercontinental flights = booking class x distance flown

What should I note?

  • Applies to flight bookings made via the booking channels of airlines that do not belong to the Lufthansa Group1
  • For bookings made via a travel agency or online travel agent, the mileage calculation is determined by the ticket number2

The Travel Calculator does it for you

Our Travel Calculator calculates the miles you can expect for every flight for you. There are two modes for this: Easy Mode and Expert Mode. Easy Mode is primarily intended for calculating the miles you can expect to receive before you book your flight. You will also find Expert Mode on our website that allows you to make a more precise calculation. This is particularly useful once you have booked your flight, as it also takes into account factors such as the booking class.

Do you have any further questions?

How are miles calculated under the fare-based system?

Under the fare-based system, your miles are calculated as follows: airfare (ticket price + surcharges levied by the Miles & More airline partner) x factor = number of miles earned. You can find further information about earning miles on flights on the website of the respective airline partner.

What factor for miles is used for Miles & More members under the fare-based system?

If you are a Miles & More member but not a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, your airfare (ticket price + supplements charged by the Miles & More airline partner) is always multiplied by a factor of 4. Miles = airfare x 4.

Which factor is used for miles for Frequent Travellers, Senators and HON Circle Members?

For members with frequent flyer status, the factor depends on the airline operating the flight. The factor is 6 if the flight is operated by Air Canada, All Nippon Airways, Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, SWISS or United Airlines. The factor is 5 for Eurowings and all other Miles & More airline partners. More information about Miles & More airline partners.

Do I still receive an Executive Bonus with the fare-based system?

As a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, you also benefit from an Executive Bonus under the fare-based system. This bonus is already included in the factors and is 25% on flights with Eurowings and other Miles & More airline partners, or 50% on flights with Air Canada, All Nippon Airways, Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, SWISS or United Airlines.

How do I know whether my flight comes under the fare-based system?

It depends on the booking channel. This system applies to any tickets sold by Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City or SWISS. Miles are awarded according to this system if you book via a direct sales channel of Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City or SWISS. If you book through a third-party sales channel, i.e. travel agencies or travel portals, the ticket number will indicate whether this system is used for allocating miles. This system applies to your flight if the first 3 digits of your ticket number are 220 (Lufthansa), 724 (SWISS), 257 (Austrian Airlines), 082 (Brussels Airlines) or 101 (Air Dolomiti), or if the tickets are issued by Eurowings. Miles are otherwise calculated according to the previous system. The exception are tickets bought via a tour operator. In this case, miles are awarded according to the booking class, irrespective of the ticket number. In rare cases where airfare information is not available, Miles & More reserves the right to continue to award miles according to the booking class system.

Does the fare-based system also apply to Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points?

No, the system does not apply to Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Point. There are only two criteria used to determine the number of Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points earned: the travel class and whether it is a continental or intercontinental flight. Points are rewarded per flight segment.

Are upgrades incentivised?

With Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS, the following calculation applies to flight bookings for which you have chosen an upgrade online or by telephone:

Miles = upgrade price x 4 (or x 6 for members with frequent flyer status)

You can find further information under the menu item “Earn miles / Flights” on the website of the airline partner concerned.

How is foreign currency converted if I don't pay in euros?

The foreign currency amount you paid is converted into euros at the conversion rate valid at the time the ticket was issued. This is based on the OANDA conversion rate at the time the ticket was issued. You can find this at: www.oanda.com.

Are miles awarded based on the total price of the flight?

No, award miles are calculated based on the airfare, i.e., the ticket price + supplements charged by the Miles & More airline partner.

How is the airfare calculated exactly?

The airfare is the ticket price + supplements charged by the Miles & More airline partner.

I have a code-share flight. Which factor applies to me?

Miles are awarded according to the factor of the operating airline. As a member, the factor is 4. As a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, the factor is 6 on flights operated by Air Canada, All Nippon Airways, Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, SWISS or United Airlines, and 5 on flights with Discover Airlines, Eurowings and Luxair.

Where can I find the ticket price that makes up the airfare including any supplements?

You can find this either on the airline’s website during the booking process, or on the booking receipt. The ticket price and the national/international supplement (shown as YQ) is indicated there.

When does the fare-based system come into effect?

The new system will apply to tickets issued after 12.3.2018 and to flights operated after 12.3.2018. Both conditions must be met.

How is the mileage credit awarded?

Miles are still credited to you after every flight. The price of the ticket is broken down into individual segments for this. Once your travel is completed, the total miles for the individual flight segments make up the mileage amount for the entire ticket.

Do I receive miles for product and service charges?

No. You only receive miles for the airfare paid (ticket price + supplements charged by the Miles & More airline partner).

Can I also earn miles for cancelled or uncompleted flights?

No. Miles are still credited solely for flight segments actually flown (a single route that includes both a take-off and a landing). For further information please see 2.3.2 in the general terms and conditions.
