What exactly is meant by the term distance miles?

Unless the ticket was issued by Lufthansa (220), SWISS (724), Austrian Airlines (257), Brussels Airlines (082) or Eurowings, distance miles reflect the actual route distance covered by your flight and form the basis for crediting miles on long-haul flights. These are multiplied by a percentage factor depending on the booking class. For intercontinental Business Class journeys with Lufthansa, for example, we record double the number of distance miles. The total distance miles are tripled on corresponding connections in First Class. This restriction with regard to the issuing airline has been in force since 12 March 2018.
