The glossary of our Award Flights

The glossary provides you with clear and understandable explanations of numerous terms related to our Award Flights. Whether you search for A like Airline surcharges, B like Booking Class, or C like Cash & Miles, you will find the most important information here.

A

Award Flight chart

Also known as a flight award chart, this is a table summarising the mileage amount needed for a return flight with Miles & More airline partners. The number of miles required is grouped by region and travel class.

Award Flight

A flight that can be booked using miles earned with Miles & More. Taxes, fees and surcharges are also incurred in addition to the miles.

Airline surcharges

Additional costs charged by the airline for certain services or routes, for example the international/national surcharge or advance seat reservation fee.

Airline partners

Airlines that work with Miles & More, and that you can earn and redeem miles with, amongst other things.

Award

Miles & More members are rewarded for their loyalty with benefits such as Award Flights, hotel stays, upgrades and other savings. Members can redeem the miles they’ve earned for these awards.

Availability

The number of bookable seats for a route on a specific departure date, in a specific booking or travel class and at a specific time.

Award Flight Specials

Very attractive Award Flights, some of which are only available for a limited time.

Buy miles

With Bundle&Go, you can earn miles even faster, and benefit from special travel deals at the same time. You can purchase each bundle (S, M or L) for a different number of miles.

Baggage

Taking baggage on flights is subject to the fare conditions of the relevant airline.

Booking class

A division of the travel classes determining the price as well as the terms and conditions of rebooking and cancelling a flight ticket. Usually shown by letter codes, such as X for Economy or I for Business Class.

An Award Flight for the companion of a Senator or HON Circle Member for 50% fewer miles. Valid for Air Dolomiti, Austrian, Brussels, Croatia, Discover, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, Luxair, LOT, and SWISS.

Travel Calculator

The Travel Calculator makes it simple to calculate the miles and Points that can be earned for a planned trip or an existing booking.

Award Flight chart

Coupon

A flight segment on a ticket that represents a single route or part of a round trip.

Child’s Award Flight

An Award Flight for a child aged between 2 and 11 with a mileage saving of 25% compared to a standard Award Flight.

Cash & Miles

With Cash & Miles, you can redeem your miles fully or in part to book flights. Available on Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa and SWISS websites from as little as 3,000 miles.

E

Mileage expiry

Earned miles will expire after 36 months. Mileage expiry is suspended for members with frequent flyer status and holders of specific Miles & More Credit Cards for as long as they continue to hold this status or credit card.

Early Bird

The Early Bird will no longer be available from October 2024 onwards.

eVouchers

Upgrade vouchers, or eVouchers, are electronic vouchers for upgrades to a higher travel class. eVouchers are awarded as a benefit for achieving a status.

Flight award

Another term for Award Flight. A flight award is a flight that you can book with the miles you’ve accrued with Miles & More. Taxes, fees and surcharges are also incurred in addition to the miles.

Flex

The standard fare for Award Flights. You’ll find the individual terms and conditions for the flight in your Award Flight booking.

Award Flight chart

Award Flight

Fly Smart Award Flight

With an Award Flight Special, book a flight up to two weeks and no later than two days before departure to save up to 40% miles. Available with Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, and LOT Polish Airlines.

Flex Plus Award Flight

The option of redeeming miles to cover airline surcharges for Award Flights with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS.

Frequent Traveller

Frequent Travellers enjoy benefits such as lounge access, priority check-in and more checked baggage. To achieve Frequent Traveller status, 650 Points and 325 Qualifying Points are required in a single calendar year.

Award Flight Specials

Very attractive Award Flights, some of which are only available for a limited time.

Feeder flights

Flights that take passengers from smaller airports to larger transfer destinations. Feeder flights are often the first leg of a journey that makes it possible for passengers to reach connecting flights to international routes.

Frequent flyer status

A Miles & More status level achieved by earning Points and Qualifying Points, offering benefits like lounge access and priority boarding. Several status levels exist, differing by the number of benefits and service priority.

Fares

The different price categories for flights, which can vary according to flexibility, availability and conditions: e.g. Economy Light, Economy Classic and Economy Flex.

H

HON Circle Points

HON Circle Points are accrued on Lufthansa Group flights and those of Miles & More airline partners when flying in Business or First Class.

HON Circle Member

HON Circle Members enjoy exclusive benefits, including First Class check-in, access to First Class Lounges and limousine transfer to the aircraft. HON Circle status is achieved with 6,000 HON Circle Points in a single calendar year.

I

Infants’ Award Flight

This is an Award Flight for an infant under the age of two, who does not need their own seat, with a mileage saving of 90%.

National/international surcharge

Lounge

The various lounges can be accessed according to the travel class of the Award Flight ticket or by those with a frequent flyer status.

M

Mileage bargains

Mileage bargains are Award Flight Specials with selected airline partners which generally carry a mileage saving of 50%.

Open-jaw flight

A flight in which the destination of the outbound flight is different from the departure location for the return flight, or the departure location of the outbound flight is not the same as the destination of the return flight.

One-way flight

A flight ticket for a single route with no return flight. A route can also comprise several segments.

P

Airline partners

Airlines that work with Miles & More, and that you can earn and redeem miles with, amongst other things.

Points

Points are credited for flights operated by the Lufthansa Group, co-issuing Miles & More airline partners and Star Alliance airlines. These Points can be earned to achieve a frequent flyer status.

Q

Qualifying Points

Qualifying Points are earned on flights operated by the Lufthansa Group and co-issuing Miles & More airline partners.

R

Retroactive mileage credit

The ability to have miles or Points for a flight, hotel stay or rental car booking credited retroactively.

Miles request

Return flight

A ticket for an outbound and return flight between two destinations.

S

Star Alliance

A global network of airlines with which passengers can earn and redeem miles, and benefit from global route and lounge services.

Senator

Senator benefits include First Class check-in, priority boarding and access to the Senator Lounge. 2,000 Points and 1,000 Qualifying Points are required for Senator status.

Airline surcharges

Additional costs charged by the airline for certain services or routes, for example the international/national surcharge or advance seat reservation fee.

Service card

A predominantly digital card issued by Miles & More that contains a service card number.

Award Flight Specials

Service card number

This is a 15-digit number issued by Miles & More upon registering and needed for earning and redeeming miles with many partners.

T

Travel class

The different classes on a flight that determine the travel comfort and services before and during the flight, for example Economy Class, Premium Economy Class, Business Class and First Class.

Travel Calculator

The Travel Calculator makes it simple to calculate the miles and Points that can be earned for a planned trip or an existing booking.

Transfer Miles

The option that members have, to transfer their miles to another account. The transfer is subject to a fee and specific conditions.

Travel ID

Travel ID is the email address given when registering after March 2022 that is used for logging in to Miles & More and all Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS digital channels.

Taxes, fees and surcharges

Additional costs beyond the basic price of a ticket. Taxes, fees, and surcharges vary by destination and routing, as airlines, countries, and airports levy them in different amounts.

3-region Award Flight

The 3-region Award Flight is suitable for flights across three regions. A stopover with a longer stay is also possible. The 3-region Award Flight is available in Economy Class from 100,000 miles.

Upgrade Award

The option of booking a ticket in a higher travel class with miles or eVouchers, in order to avail oneself of the benefits, such as more comfortable seating, a higher checked baggage allowance and access to exclusive services.

World Award Flight

You can make a round-the-world trip with Star Alliance airlines within a period of one year for 180,000 miles in Economy Class (335,000 miles in Business Class and 500,000 in First Class).

The 3-region Award Flight is suitable for flights across three regions. A stopover with a longer stay is also possible. The 3-region Award Flight is available in Economy Class from 100,000 miles.
